I believe that so far your writing has been modelled to fit with the pictures, and I think you are right when you say it will be an effort to change it to stand alone, but I think you will find it a doable and interesting challenge rather than an overwhelming obstacle, so yeah, forge ahead.
Maybe you can release an occasional picture that accidentally fits the story as it unfolds anyway? Because your pictures are gorgeous and I am sure you have a stash of them.
